Jim Duff Music Blog
Growing up in Kentucky, Jim Duff counted the legends of traditional Country music as his heroes. Artists like Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson and Townes Van Zandt made a huge impact on the young songwriter and helped shape his sound. However, music was not his only talent and life took him in another direction for a while.

Musical Instruments Make Better Toys
So many children's toys these days have virtually no value after a very short time. Musical instrument toys however have the potential to last for a lifetime. Not just from a durability perspective, but they are one of the few toys you can buy your children that can have a positive effect on them for the rest of their lives. Apart from the educational value, musical instrument toys can expose your children to the value of art and artistry through music. There are musical instrument toys for kids of all age. From infants to teenagers. Of course, at some point they stop being toys, and become real musical instruments. Apart from the biggest difference being price, the older your kids are when playing with musical instruments, the more likely the positive long term effects will be.
It Starts With A Little Rhythm
The younger the better. All babies love banging pots and pans, which is a pretty reasonably priced solution for a musical instrument, but at some point you may want to move them up to something thatdoesn't have spaghetti stains on it. Possibly even something a little quieter. Some basic little xylophones, or tiny baby sized piano keyboards would be a good choice. I've seen some music books with a piano keyboard attached. The keys were all numbered, and the music book had the numbers superimposed on top of the written notes. Simple enough for any child to pick up, as well as providing a great introduction to reading sheet music. Albiet at a very simplistic level, but still a start.
Some Professional Help
When introducing them to enough different types of musical instrument toys, you will have an opportunity to observe, which musical instruments seem to spark an interest in them. Or if your really lucky, you may notice that they have a naturalaptitude for certain instruments. While true musical prodigies are far and few between, there are varying degrees of talent for those of us below the prodigy level. As they get older, it may be time to seek out the guidance of a qualified musical instructor. While children will likely enjoy their early lessons immensely, there will come a point where it will become boring and tedious for them. It's important to strike a good parental balance at this point. While it's important not to let them quit just because their bored, it's also important not to force them to do something till they despise it.

Developing a Distinct Guitar Playing Style
After you've been playing guitar for some time, you will have developed some basic guitar skills and you'll in all probability be interested in developing your own signature style. Can you imagine anyone not wanting to express themselves in a way that is uniquely "them"? Learning the proper method to play involves more than just copying. No one is like you. Don't you suppose it's time to dig in and unleash your individual sound and guitar playing style on the world?
We Say "There's No One Like Him" for a Reason
Striving to develop your own style is something you actually should try to do, no matter what style you currently identify with the most (blues, country, jazz, classical, metal, slide, finger-style, and so on). In fact, one huge tip for uncovering your own guitar playing style is to sample other guitarists across a variety of genres. Don't just keep on listening to your most-loved albums regardless of how super-fantastic you think they are! They say "Variety is the spice of life" for a reason, you know.. Every guitarist should be listening now and again to legends like B.B.King, Chet Atkins, and Andre Segovia. Those guys are giants in their chosen styles (blues, country, and Spanish classical, respectively), and had a large influence across other styles, too.
Other more contemporary legends with their own guitar playing style are Eric Clapton and Tommy Emmanuel, just to mention two almost at random. These two can be playing with a wall of amps behind them or unplugged and you instantly know who it is. They both have an incredibly distinct sound all their own. And the one approach for you to develop this type of sound is by educating yourself on everything that has gone before. Soaking it all in and letting it get under your skin; letting it become part of you.
If you would like to be an amazing guitarist with your own personal, distinct guitar playing style that people immediately recognise, you, too, need to think about doing something different. Being totally different and fresh and unique is something we all attempt as musicians (or artists, on the whole), and if you want it, it's possible for you to have it. To do this, though, you have to "stretch your ears" and soak up some tunes beyond the confines of your regular radio-listening and CD collection.
More Than The Sum of Its Parts
Only by overcoming the resistance to soak up and play different things (and to essentially feel it) will you start to discover and draw out your own and unique style. Of course, don't play stuff you don't like! But I do advocate that you have a go at various things: borrow different guitars and pay attention to (really learn to hear) how they sound, shuffle your pedal rack (or just unplug it!), string your guitar with some different gauge strings and pay attention to the differences in tone and whether you prefer it, and so on... Never lose sight, however, of this one necessary truth: you're the only one able to express what it is that you want that guitar to express. It's coming from you and the guitar and all the gear, well, that's all just the channel for the expression.
At first it won't seem particularly "you." However, if you let it all swirl around inside, a sound new and fresh and different will ultimately emerge. A sort of "synthesis" will happen. You'll take all the little "snippets" you've been accumulating and stick them together in combinations that no one has ever achieved before! And right about then you'll begin to really feel you're "in the zone." The goal that most guitarists hope to one of these days achieve, and which most, sadly, never do, will be yours: your personal, distinctive guitar playing style.

Why Do Musicians Practice?
A Musician who does not practice cannot really call themselves a musician. Anyone who loves their instrument and wants to make it part of their life should crave time to further master their art. Sometimes, musicians go through a period of non-practice for a number of reasons, but in general, they have passion and look forward to any opportunity to play music.
A musician can always rehearse, prepare, repeat, refine, sharpen and improve constantly towards further precision and ease, aiming for a flawless and faultless performance every time. They should be able to play their instrument as effortlessly as they can blink or breath and constant, regular practice is the only way to achieve this.
Just because you know how to read music and can work out how to play songs with ease does not mean you do not have to put in time and effort. If you are serious about wanting music to be a part of your life, you will have to learn all you can and continue to improve indefinitely.
Musicians who refuse to practice seem arrogant and conceited and often fall behind everyone else in ability and technique. Lack of discipline is a very unattractive quality in a musician and other professionals only give credit to those who work at developing their talent.
Part of practicing is usually being creative and coming up with new material. If you don't give yourself the time to practice and perfect your instrument, you will never be inspired to master a new tune or write more lyrics. If you are part of a band for example, you don't want to be the only one who never writes new material or contributes to the group. And you want other band members to see noticeable improvements in your abilities so they will respect and trust you. It also isn't enough to write music, you need to practice and perfect it so every time you perform you are faultless.
Many people are blessed with natural musical abilities. This does not mean there still isn't more to be learned about technique and training that has been developed through the ages. Singing is a great example of this and is a musical art form that has been fine-tuned by many exceptional singers from history. Techniques to train the voice and extend the abilities of the vocal chords have been tried and tested and if you don't know them, you are going to be less than you could be.
Singing lessons go further into teaching you tongue techniques, pronunciation practices and posture positions that can improve your sound and success to no end. Those who believe there natural ability is enough to get by in life more often than not fail and look back with regret.
Someone who really wants to make a career out of music could succeed through their actions, not their words. Talking about music and even listening to it all the time is not going to get you anywhere. You have to practice, practice, practice and then practice some more! If you aren't doing this, you aren't serious.
You need to seek out anyone who can give you advice or lessons to further your knowledge and add to your technique. Do not fall into the trap of thinking you know everything just because you have had a few compliments over the years. To truly make it in any part of the music industry, you have to learn from the professionals. Don't be stubborn and be willing to let go of old habits and learn some new and better ones.
It could be something as simple as your posture. You may play guitar so intently, you have never even realized that some of the positions you hold your body in are making things harder for you. A professional can point this out and give you homework you can practice to change your old habits. Singers especially need to know all about posture and how to hold their neck, jaw and tongue. Breathing is very important and practice and warm-ups are vital to success.
If you love your instrument, but are finding it difficult to practice, there are some things you can do about it. You may be lacking motivation or have possibly reached the peak of what you are able to do by yourself. You should look at getting together with others who play appropriate instruments and have jam sessions. This is a free for all group music practice where you play anything and everything, resulting in inspiration and a fresh lease on your musical life.
Introduce some visualizations or meditation practice into your everyday schedule, where you picture yourself achieving your desired outcome from your music. Make a list of the steps you need to take to get there. If you have reached a point where you are uninspired, go and get lessons. You will be bound to learn many new things you can practice and introduce into your writing. If none of these things seem to work for you, then you need to look at whether you really have a love and passion for the instrument you have learned. It could be time to consider trying something new.
Musicians practice for many reasons, but if you don't have a natural desire to spend the time doing it, there is no point in dreaming. If you are a musician but you spend little or no time going over what you know, learning new things and writing new songs, you should look seriously at whether the instrument is right for you. If it is just a case of going through a motivation drought, take some steps to get the spark back and have faith it will pass. Be patient on your musical pathway and know that, if you put in the hard work and stay positive, you will be rewarded.

How to Strum – Playing Rhythm Guitar
The aim of strumming is to make more than one string sound at the same time on a guitar. You can use your fingernails or a pick held in your right hand and pull down across all the strings, while you hold a chord down on the frets with your left hand.
Strumming is done in a pattern – a set of up-down strums that are to a certain rhythm and fit the beat of the song you are playing. There are many different types of strumming patterns based on the style of the music you are playing. People invent new ones every day!
It’s not difficult to develop your strumming techniques and guitar skills; the key is practice.
Smooth strumming – acoustic guitar technique
In an acoustic guitar the strings are usually strummed in a down-up path over the sound hole. There’s no hard and fast rule that says you need to strum there. Many different sounds can be achieved if you strum in different parts of the guitar; you can get crisp and sharp sounds closer to the bridge for example.
Electric guitar strumming is very similar to acoustic guitar, except that it is usually done just over the first pickup.
Smooth strumming can be achieved by holding the pick loosely. If you hold it with too much pressure, then you will be pushing down on the strings too hard and the sound will be too loud. You need to hold your pick loosely enough so that you can easily switch sides of it as you are strumming – when you strum down, the bottom half of the pick will be touching the strings and as you come back up, it’s the top half that will touch them. The volume of the chord you strum will be determined by the pressure which you put on the strings with the pick.
A good way to practice getting the right volume coming out of the strumming is to sing lyrics to songs while you are playing. Others will be able to tell you whether or not they can hear the words or not. If they can’t hear them, you’re putting too much pressure on the strings and you will be strumming too harshly!
It’s also good to pick a thin or a medium pick when you’re starting out (refer to other article about different types of picks). Heavy picks are usually used by musicians playing the lead riffs and solos.
Positioning of the various parts of the guitar, your hand, elbow, angle of the neck of the guitar also need to be comfortable. The more comfortable you are while you are holding the guitar, the easier it is to strum more smoothly and with less pressure.
Smooth strumming itself is also not a straight up and down motion; many guitarists refer to the correct strumming technique by thinking of “little orbits.” You actually make tiny circles while you strum across the strings as you pull down and up; your wrist moves in these tiny circular motions across the range of strings that you strum for your chord.
For more ideas and tips of good strumming technique, you can refer to this online series of free videos. (http://www.jamplay.com/guitar-lessons/beginners/30/999-47-precision-strumming)
Guitar strum patterns – strumming exercises
There are many patterns that you can practice when you are learning how to strum a guitar. Some of the most common ones are as follows:
Rock and Pop
a) down down-up up up-down-up
b) down down down down
c) down-up-down-up-down-up-down-up
d) down down-up-down down-up
Jazz and Funk
a) Jazz guitarists often play with a simple four-to-a-bar rhythm, with variation of chords on each beat
b) “straight eights” are a simple eight-to-a-bar rhythm, while “swung eights” are played with each pair as the first and third notes in a triplet
c) staccato and percussive effects can be created by lifting the fretting hand off the fretboard to dampen chords
d) Sixteenth note patterns are used in funk
e) There is often lots of syncopation used in jazz strumming as well
Fingerstyle
There are also many fingerstyle strumming techniques that you can use; this is done by plucking the string directly with your fingertips, fingernails or picks stuck to the fingers; this is often used in classical, flamenco, bossa nova, ragtime, clawhammer, folk and baroque music
Mistakes that lead to harsh/rush strumming
The main reason why harsh and rushed strumming occurs is because you are usually putting too much pressure on your strumming. You can relax your arms more and make sure you are using circular motions of your wrist to strum the chords. Hold the pick lightly and not too tight and let it loose.
Harsh and rushed strumming could also happen when you are not strumming down and up at the same pressure. Practice strumming only a few strings in tiny circles until you have an even strum for both down and up motions.
Solutions for getting tense
If your hands are getting tense then here are a few things you can try:
- stop playing, shake your hands and fingers out
- when you start strumming again, go slower than you did before
- as soon as you start feeling tense again, stop playing and stretch your fingers again
- use circular motions of your wrist to strum
- practice only on a few strings at a time until you get the strumming right
- make sure you take a 5-10 minute break after playing for about 45 minutes; come back refreshed and slow down your tempo a bit
- try to always feel loose and comfortable! never put pressure on any part of the guitar

Playing Lead Guitar
When you are learning how to play lead guitar there are basic points you need to think of as rules that will help your guitar playing. As a lead guitar player you are a picker, a player of single notes. So, that's your first rule, practice your scales and riffs. Most people who play lead guitar learn the blues scale, and you should learn it too because it is what many rock guitar solos are based on. But you also need to learn the pentatonic scales. These are five notes scales that you can play all the way up the fretboard.
When you are practicing the blues scale, practice in the key of whatever song you are learning. So if you want to learn to play the blues scale in A, your root note will be on the sixth string at the fifth fret. As a novice lead guitar player don't fall into the trap of playing all downstrokes. Use alternate picking and work on getting a clean sound. Once you have some practice, try playing tremolo or just playing each note of the scale twice. I've already mentioned that you need to be a single note player. But the single note player knows other things besides picking. He is an expert at hammer-ons, pull-offs and note bending.
As a lead guitar player you may have decided that you are so anxious to start playing lead guitar you don't have time to learn to read music. Okay, so don't. Learn to read guitar tab instead. It shows you where to put your fingers to play solos. As long as you have an idea of how the solo sounds, the guitar tab will give you the notes on the fretboard. You can find plenty of guitar tabs on the internet, and it will take you about half an hour to get the hang of reading them. You can also find them in guitar tutor books and guitar magazines.
One thing you will notice when you are first starting out is that guitars have their limitations. Some cheap the guitar models feature a whammy bar but if you use it your strings will break. On some other models your strings will break if you try bending them too much. If you can only afford a cheap guitar at the moment, you will just have to put up with these limitations.
If you've seen lead guitarists improvising you could be forgiven for thinking that a just randomly running the notes of the scale together. What they are really doing is making use of a collection of licks they have learned from studying other guitar players, and combining them to make licks of their own. Luckily, you don't have to go learning these licks by ear because many famous guitar solos are readily available for free on guitar tab sites.

Blues Background Introduction
Blues is about tradition and personal expression. At its core, the blues has remained the same since its inception. Most blues feature simple, usually three-chord, progressions and have simple structures that are open to endless improvisations, both lyrical and musical. The blues grew out of African spirituals and worksongs. In the late 1800s, southern African-Americans passed the songs down orally, and they collided with American folk and country from the Appalachians. New hybrids appeared by each region, but all of the recorded blues from the early 1900s are distinguished by simple, rural acoustic guitars and pianos. After World War II, the blues began to fragment, with some musicians holding on to acoustic traditions and others taking it to jazzier territory. However, most bluesmen followed Muddy Waters' lead and played the blues on electric instruments. From that point on, the blues continued to develop in new directions -- particularly on electric instruments -- or it has been preserved as an acoustic tradition. All Music Guide

How to Play Guitar and Sing at the Same Time
Learning an easy method to accompany yourself on guitar (also often called "singing and playing guitar at the same time") is undoubtedly among the more important goals for more than a few beginner and intermediate guitarists. It's so cool to be able to sit around with friends at social occasion and have a sing-along It's also an obvious benefit when beginning or trying out for a band.
Is a Superb Voice Really Necessary to Play Guitar and Sing?
The brief answer is "No." Of course, you need to be able to hold a tune. However, being able to sing like some incredible recording musician vocal celebrity is just not vital by any stretch of the imagination! The truth is, some of the biggest singer-songwriters ever, such as Bob Dylan or Neil Young, do not have especially great voices nor are they particularly amazing guitarists. But, boy do they know the right way to write and sing a tune! It does not make any difference in the slightest whether you want to simply play and sing guitar at parties or you wish to write your own songs for the entire world, do not let an average singing voice stop you. Singing is one of those rare things that is based on heart-felt emotion.
Now, of course, you do need to be able to sing fairly well, however that is simply a matter of training. Take a few singing classes and study all the basics of how to sing and you'll discover your voice expands dramatically. Then, determine whether or not you need to take your singing even more seriously or if that is enough for just singing at the same time as playing guitar.
Select a Track and Work Out How to Play the Chords
The normal tendency for many learners is to attempt to play guitar and sing at the same time too soon. That is really, really not a particularly clever idea. What you should do is learn how to play the guitar part first. And then learn to sing the vocals. And then put them together.
Your first step, then, is to choose a track you like with comparatively simple chord progressions and straight-forward chord changes. It does not matter which one you choose. It really doesn't. There are tons of straight-forward songs for beginner guitarists. Just one thing you'll be able to learn how to play the chords to reasonably simply, and which you genuinely like. Oh, and which does not have a super-hard vocal part. Whatever you select needs to be do-able. You don't want to spend all this time and then not even be able to sing the vocals.
Once you've chosen your tune to focus on (and you must only focus on ONE at a time!), spend as much time as you need and practise until you can play the guitar part back-to-front, up-and-down. Don't simply focus on your fretting hand, either. Pay attention to your right hand: the rhythm patterns and your strumming technique. Practise, then practise some more without singing until you have learned how to play the guitar part and built up a type of "muscle memory," which means you can play it without taking a look at every chord change or slowing down.
Take the Tune You've Selected and Learn to Sing It
Next is to progress to learning how to sing it. Your first step right here is to commit the lyrics to memory. Do NOT try to play guitar and sing at the same time quite yet! Merely study the lyrics and pay attention to how the singer hits certain notes, holds other notes (and for how long), and puts across the emotion of the track.
When you have "the vibe" of the tune and you have learned the lyrics, you may need to record yourself singing along with the music. Yes, the thought of that in all probability sends shivers down your spine, however the truth is it is advisable know how your voice sounds and the places you require some extra focus and help if you're ever going to play guitar and sing in front of people.
Now to Put Both the Playing and Singing Together!
Okay, now you're ready to tackle putting together the two halves, playing and singing. Watch for the weird thing that will happen: You may start making mistakes within the chord progressions, you will forget the lyrics, you might get tripped up on simple sections of the song... All the parts that you had completely under control the day before, they're going to now be difficult again. Weird. It will seem hard at first (and, it is not an easy thing to do), as if your brain and hands just refuse to work together!
Take it easy. This is only a small adjustment and by slowing down and practising in a really deliberate and attentive fashion, you'll begin to get it fairly quickly. The danger here is frustration and boredom. Do NOT quit now and start learning a new song. Keep on with the plan and before you know it you'll find that you can play guitar and sing at the same time!

The Basics Of Learning Beginning Guitar
Music in its many forms provides enjoyment for people and learning to play guitar is just one way that you can have this pleasure for yourself and others. Before you can truly play the guitar decently though, you will need to have beginning guitar lessons as well as a guitar!
On the face of it, as an instrument the guitar doesn't seem to have much to advocate it to someone who's looking to buy this instrument. However, all this can change from the very first minute you begin your first guitar lessons. Beginning guitar players should not become disheartened even before they take their first lessons.
Guitar is an intricate process of learning. It takes patiences, articulation and a strong desire to learn. There are many faucets to understand when learning this new instrument. So, stay the course and be open to the learning process, you will be glad you did.

* How to play a chromatic scale
* How to play simple songs using Gmajor, Cmajor and Dmajor chords
Now this is no means the standard and even what you will learn. Every instruction and institution teaches different elements of beginner guitar. This however, gives you an idea as to the things and level at which you will learn.

This is just to name a few, of course there are many more.
When looking for an instructor choose someone who you feel comfortable with and who you respect or look up to. This person should be experience and play the genre of music you are wanting to learn. Ask for references, bio and any other information that will provide you with the information needed to make a decision.

For this reason if you are learning to play the guitar from an instructor you should be able to ask the teacher for advice and help if you feel that you are missing out on some point of the lesson.
Also once you are well-situated holding the guitar and you have learned to identify the assorted chords in your beginning guitar lessons, you can then continue to learn how to mix these basic chords together to produce a little song or a tune.
Remember, learning guitar takes patiences, confidence and the desire to learn the instrument. Like anything else in life, without these fundamental elements your guitar experience may be short lived.

Having beginning guitar lessons is one of the best ways you can learn to play guitar and transform your little tunes into beautiful songs. It gives you an avenue to express yourself and give the world a little piece of yourself. Good luck in your endeavors and have fun...

5 Tips on How to Get the Most Out of Guitar Lessons for Beginners
Learning the guitar is almost a rite of passage for many children and guitar lessons can either make or break this dream relatively quickly. While many instruments available to students in school can be difficult to learn, few actually pose the same set of difficulties as the guitar. Guitar lessons for beginners can be fun and exciting, but they can also turn a student off from music altogether. Why?
1. Strengthening the Finger Tips
Learning to play the guitar requires that the student endure some level of pain in the fingers. This has to do with the process of building calluses in the fingertips. Calluses are hardened skin around the area that actually touch the guitar strings and new students taking guitar lessons for the first time will not have any of this toughened skin built up. The strings will penetrate deep into the flesh and cause some tenderness and potentially a little pain.
Young children are especially susceptible to giving up when this happens, so it's important for music teachers to encourage them to press forth, especially in the beginning. Within a few weeks of consistent playing time, the calluses will form and soon the student will no longer feel any pain in their fingers. Offer rewards to the student for completing their guitar lessons or practice times.
2. Knowing the Right Form
What can be a bit tricky when talking about playing through the pain for a student is knowing when it's the muscles in their hands and wrist that are hurting, and that they should stop.
Most times during kids guitar lessons and the process of practicing exercises that are new, muscles need to be strengthened. While this process will certainly cause some level of discomfort, if the student actually feels pain in the hand or wrist, then they should stop and take a break. This can also be an indicator that they are not practicing the proper techniques, or their posture is not right.
Slouching in a chair is a common problem for new students taking guitar lessons. When they are first learning, their eyes will be constantly fixated on the strings and what their hands are doing. This is quite normal and encouraged; they should be certain that they are playing the appropriate notes and begin to learn what those notes are and this cannot happen unless they are watching their hands. While looking down at their hands all the time, though, the student will tend to hunch over the guitar. As time progresses at any one practice session, their entire body will begin to sag over the guitar and this takes their arm out of proper position.
When the arm is out of its proper playing position, the wrong muscles are being used to play certain notes or chords. It's a good idea to check in on the student as they are practicing and remind them about their posture, as well as the importance of it. When taking kids guitar lessons, some students can become so enrapt by it that they lose track of time and what their body is doing. They may be learning the patterns and becoming better at playing, but they'll run into some difficulty when playing upright or standing.
3. Keeping the Student Engaged in Practice
Good music teachers will devise exciting exercises at the guitar lessons for the student to take home. Often, during the first few weeks, while some muscle memory and strength is being built, these exercises will be quite mundane. Ask the music teacher for some music that the student can play along with, preferable something that is popular today. It doesn't have to be anything tricky or beyond their ability; there are always songs that can be transcribed to suit any level of player, including absolute beginners.
If you break up the exercise routine with play-along time to something they know, when the student begins to hear the results, their enjoyment level will climb exponentially. Guitar lessons for beginners are a process of building one technique upon another. It is important that the student maintain the integrity of the exercises, but also find moments of measurable improvement each week.
4. Keeping a Schedule
Keeping a schedule for guitar lessons is also a great benefit for several reasons. First, the body is a machine and when a routine is developed, it begins to anticipate what's to come. When learning guitar, by creating a consistent schedule of guitar lessons, and practice time, the student will begin to anticipate each day and will look forward to, rather than dread, the guitar lessons.
5. Getting the Right Equipment with Breaking the Bank
Also, the right guitar can make a major difference in whether the student enjoys the guitar lessons or not. There's no need to purchase a $1,000 guitar for a beginner, but try to avoid the Wal-Mart specials. Ask the guitar instructor whom you've chosen what brand or type of guitar will be best for the student and their age range. A guitar that is too large for small hands will lead to frustration and a loss of interest.

To Compose Music, First Learn To Improvise
One of the greatest motivators of learning to play an instrument for most people is the thought of being able to compose their own music, to take their talent to a new level, and use their music to express their inner feelings. The first step to take to learn how to compose your own music is to learn the art of improvising. The good news is that it isn't as hard as you think.
The sad thing about learning improvisation, is that many people put a lot of emphasis on the fact that they must first learn to master chords, notes, read music, and be able to play other peoples music well, before they can get onto the more important task of creating their own masterpieces. The result of these thoughts usually ends with the person becoming so caught up in getting everything right that they feel afraid to improvise, and compose simply because they fear getting it wrong, or creating something that sounds terrible.
Why Improvisation Is Important
Improvisation is vital to a musician, because it is a lesson taught in creativity, and it develops an ear for hearing music on a whole new level, and copying it. For those who want to learn to compose, creativity is the most important aspect of being a composer, it is even more important than knowing keys, notes, chords, or even reading music itself.
Improvisation at its greatest can be found in jazz music. If you want to learn about improvisation, be sure to listen to some of the classic jazz. Jazz is the type of music that was mostly improvised, and added to. It was rarely played to a set out strict music sheet, but evolved as it was being played, and only got better each time the musician played it.
How To Improvise
Improvisation is nothing more than experimentation, and creativity. We all have those two things. Don't be fooled into thinking that, in order to improvise, you must first know all of the chords, or notes used to play your instrument. Improvisation can be started off as early as when you have learned your first couple of notes, or chords.
The best way to use improvisation is to experiment with the chords or notes as you are learning them. If you are taking lessons, use some your practice time to try out different chord, or note combinations. Try anything you like, experiment. Improvisation is all about learning the art of non-conformity to the average style of music, and how to learn to use your creative talents to make an expression of yourself.
How To Deal With The Internal Critic
Everyone's a critic, but we are our own worst critic. Most people are afraid to try new and different things simply because they are afraid to fail. The first time that you improvise, you will probably sound terrible, and maybe even the second time, too. This isn't failing, this is learning. As you get better at playing your instrument, you will also get better at improvising. If you start off learning how to improvise early, you will only get better at it as you learn more chords, or notes. By starting to improvise early on, you will never be concerned about when the right time to start improvising is, simply because right now is the best time to start.
Don't be afraid of what other people will think, either. If you are afraid of someone criticizing your first attempts at improvising, just play your instrument when nobody is around, until you are more confident, and ready to share your music with others.
Taking Improvisation Into A Musical Composition
Once you have mastered improvisation, it is only a small step to take it to the next level, which is creating music of your own. Once again, composing music is a lot like improvisation, and to master it you need to be creative, and understand that it may not sound perfect at first. But with a little creativity and some tweaking, you have the potential to make the music in your head come to life through your instrument.
Conclusion
Composing is nothing more than letting yourself be creative, and letting that creativity to make your music unique. You don't have to be able to play as well as Mozart to start to improvise, and from there begin to compose music. Mozart started out just like you, improvising, learning, and then composing. So let your creative talents flow, and remember that you don't have to get it right every time. But you do have to want to succeed.

Guitar Lesson: Fretboard Education
Do you really know the name of the notes on your guitar fretboard? You can learn the notes well and in a short time if you put a little energy into the project!
It will really help you as a guitarist if you know the names of the notes on your guitar. Let's see some of the benefits you reap from learning to know your guitar:
1. It will be much easier to learn to play sheet music notation as you already know where to find the notes on your guitar. The only remaining task is to learn the names of the notes on the sheet music staff.
2. You will find it much easier to understand chords and remember chords as you easily can see where to put your fingers to play the required notes.
3. It will be easier for you to understand guitar lessons on the net or in guitar instructional books as you understand an important part of the language used in guitar instruction.
We will start with something you can learn as your first task if don't already know this. It is to know the names of the notes on the open strings of your guitar. An open string is a string not pressed down by a left hand finger.
The first string with the highest pitch on your guitar is normally tuned to an E. If you press down the twelfth fret you will find an E one octave higher. I will now give you the names of the open strings beginning with the first string:
E B G D A E
You can practice the names of the strings by playing the strings from the sixt string down to the first and back at the same time saying the names of the strings aloud or in your mind.
An easy and effective exercise to use to learn the notes on the fretboard is to concentrate on one note at a time trying to find the note on all the strings beginning with the sixth string.
Let's start with the note E. On the sixth string you will find it on the open string. Can you spot the E on the next string? This exercise will also help you develop your ear.
Listen to the E on the sixth string and press down a finger on the fifth string and slide it until you will find an E on this string. As this is not a test but an article I will tell you that you will find an E on fret 7.
On string four you will find an E on fret 2. On string three it's on fret 8. On string 2 on fret 5 and on string one on the open string.
Now you can practice the E notes by playing one string at a time from the sixth string down to the first and back again until you can do it automatically.
Do the same with the note G for example trying to find the right fret by listening. On the sixth string you will fing G on fret three. Of course the notes will be found in different octaves and this will be a great exercise to hear the notes and recognize them by listening.
There are many more exercises you can use to learn the notes on the fretboard. The message is that you will learn the notes on the guitar fretboard in a short time if you make a conscious effort to learn them.
